Your Canopy, Designed in 3D Before We Build It

We use advanced digital measuring and 3D CAD technology to design your boat canopy with millimetre precision, so you can see the finished result before any material is cut.

At AJ Boat Canopies Ltd, we are always looking for ways to improve accuracy, efficiency, and the overall experience for our customers. Traditionally, all of our canopies were measured and patterned by hand using proven methods developed over years of experience. While this approach has always delivered great results, we recognised the opportunity to take things further.

We have now invested in advanced digital measuring technology, including the Prodim Proliner and Leica systems. These tools allow us to capture highly accurate measurements of your boat, creating a precise digital model of the space we are working with.

From this data, we design your canopy entirely in 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design). This modern approach allows us to build your canopy virtually before any materials are cut.

What This Means for You

Using 3D CAD offers a number of key benefits:

  • Visualise Before Production
You can see a full 3D model of your canopy before it is made, giving you complete confidence in the final result.
  • Customisation Made Easy
We can quickly adjust design features such as zip positions, window layouts, openings, and overall structure — all before manufacturing begins.
  • Improved Accuracy
Digital measurement reduces the risk of error and ensures a precise fit tailored specifically to your boat.
  • Better Communication
With a clear visual model, it’s easier for you to understand the design and request any changes, ensuring everything is exactly how you want it.
Before After

What Makes This Possible?

Creating accurate 3D CAD models and manufacturing directly from them is only possible when we have complete confidence in the data we collect on your boat.

That’s why we use the Leica iCON iCS50 — a state-of-the-art digital measuring system designed for high-precision 3D templating.

This technology allows us to capture detailed measurements of your boat with exceptional accuracy. The system is capable of achieving accuracy of around 1mm at 10 metres, ensuring every curve, angle, and contour is recorded exactly as it is in real life.

Using advanced visual measurement technology, the Leica system tracks points in real time and builds a highly detailed digital model. Unlike traditional measuring methods, it can capture complex shapes, curves, and difficult areas quickly and reliably — even on challenging surfaces.

The scanning process itself is relatively quick. Depending on the type and complexity of the cover, this typically takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

The majority of the time is spent in the design stage. Once the data has been captured, it goes through multiple stages of processing and refinement before it is ready for manufacturing. This ensures everything is accurate and built exactly to specification.

Our 3D rendered models are extremely accurate. Each design is built directly from the original scan of your boat, ensuring everything is based on real, precise data.

We digitally create every surface of the canopy, including the canvas panels, and carefully position all features such as zips, windows, and openings within the model. Everything is designed fully to scale, so what you see on screen reflects exactly how the canopy will be manufactured.

During your measuring appointment, we take the time to build a clear and detailed brief so we fully understand what you’re looking for.

Once your 3D designs are ready, you will receive them for review and have one revision included to make any desired changes. This allows you to refine details such as zip positions, window layouts, and overall design features.

If further changes are requested after the initial revision, additional charges may apply. This ensures the design process remains efficient while still giving you the flexibility to achieve exactly what you want.

Yes — your canopy is manufactured directly from the approved 3D CAD model. This means the final product will match the design you have seen and approved, giving you complete confidence before production begins.

Yes. If you are unsure about certain elements, we can create alternative design options within the 3D model before you commit. This allows you to compare layouts, features, and details so you can make a fully informed decision.

Due to the accuracy of our equipment and design process, issues are extremely rare. However, in the unlikely event that something doesn’t fit as expected, we will fully assess the situation, re-scan if necessary, and redesign your canopy to ensure a perfect fit. We have complete confidence in both our technology and our process.

It is beneficial, but not essential. During the appointment, we carry out a full digital scan of your boat, which becomes the foundation for the design. This means the canopy design itself is not finalised on the day, and we can develop it with you afterwards based on your requirements.

The full process typically takes around 6 weeks, from initial scan through to final fitting.

Every canopy we produce is completely bespoke. You can customise all aspects of the design, including:

  • Framework
  • Zip positions
  • Windows and window covers
  • Openings and access points
  • Overall shape and layout
  • Materials and finishes

We design everything around your specific requirements.

3D CAD allows us to design with a level of precision and flexibility that isn’t possible with traditional methods alone. It gives you the ability to visualise your canopy before it is made, make informed decisions, and ensures a highly accurate final product — all while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship.

Yes. We keep your digital design on file, which makes future repairs, adjustments, or additional work much quicker and more efficient.

Yes. We can scan and design around existing frames or structures, whether you’re replacing an old canopy or upgrading your current setup.

We can work with a wide range of boats, including narrowboats, widebeams, and other canal craft. Our process allows us to adapt to different shapes and layouts with ease.
